Presented by Donahue Tucker & Ciandella, the next Beer for History takes place on Thursday, Thursday 24 with Sea Dog Brewing the featured brewer.

Supplying food for each of the Series’ five events, Sea Dog Brewing is expected to bring three beers, each of which are only available hyper-locally. Exeter River Red is an Irish Red Ale in which the grain bill has been enhanced to give it greater complexity; Newington Abbey Ale, a traditional Belgium Trappist Abbey Ale; and Merrimac Valley Cream Ale is a lighter smoother beer that utilized corn in addition to barley to give it a more creamy quality.

In addition to craft brew and beer, the event will feature live colonial-inspired music and entertainment. Each event in the Series take place in historic Folsom Tavern (1775), which is one of two structures on the property of the American Independence Museum, which organizes it.

“This is a chance to have a beer where George Washington had one in 1789,” said Series Organizer Victoria Su. “It’s festive, fun and family-friendly.”

Other events in the Series include Tilton Brothers Brewing (11/7) and Bad Lab Beer Co. (11/21). 

“The series is even more enjoyable because it features brewers deeply invested in the community,” added Su. “By supporting us and them, you support Exeter and surrounding towns while having a great night out.”

Proceeds from the event support educational programming and care of the museum’s collection, which includes two working drafts of the US Constitution and an original copy of the Declaration of Independence. 

Tickets for each Beer for History event are $15 for members and $20 for non-members, while youth (under 21) are $3. Ticket prices include beer (21+), entertainment and light snacks. $10 designated driver tickets are also available.

On Thursday, October 10, Throwback Brewery returns to the American Independence Museum’s Beer for History, presented by Donahue Tucker & Ciandella.

Bringing together some of the region’s finest craft brewers, including Stowe, Vermont’s von Trapp Brewing, which recently kicked off the series, Beer for History takes place in historic Folsom Tavern, built in 1775.

As for the next Beer for History, Co-Founder and President Nicole Carrier said they will bring Campfire Smoked Robust Porter, Heidi Go Seek Oktoberfest, Spicy Bohemian Jalapeno Pilsener and a fourth beer to be named later.

“We are thrilled to once again be part of  the American Independence Museum’s Beer For History,” she said. “Throwback was founded, after all, with a nod to history where women were the brewers and the beer was made using local ingredients and served in community-oriented pubs.”

Expressing appreciation for Throwback Brewery’s return to the series, museum Executive Director Emma Stratton said their participation has special significance.

“Folsom Tavern was run by Widow Folsom and her daughters at one point in its long history,” she said. “It it really incredible to see this thread of strong, business savvy women played out through history in our series.”

Other events in the series welcome Sea Dog Brewing (10/24), Tilton Brothers Brewing (11/7), and Bad Lab Beer Co. (11/21). Sea Dog Brewing will provide food at each event, which will also include colonial-inspired live music and games.

“If you want to learn a little bit about local history and enjoy yourselves in a family-friendly colonial tavern, Beer for History is for you,” added Stratton.

Celebrating the rich history of both Exeter and that of the Granite State, the 2019 Beer for History series recently garnered the attention of Donahue Tucker & Ciandella, which has agreed to sponsor it through 2020.

In 2019, Beer for History will expand to include 5 dates at which a featured brewer will pour several beers, colonial clad musicians will sing period-inspired music, and attendees may participate in various colonial games.

According to Lizabeth MacDonald of Donahue Tucker & Ciandella, Beer for History’s emphasis on fun and community is “a recipe for success.”

“It takes the colonial history of our state along with our strong belief in community and turns it into a festive, family-friendly affair,” she said. “We are very excited to get behind this series both this year and next.”

Emma Bray, museum executive director, said the multi-year support will help staff plan “the most engaging community events possible.”

“Knowing we have their support behind us allows us to plan ahead to 2020,” she said. “We are all very excited for this year’s series.”

This year, von Trapp Brewing and Throwback Brewery return to Beer for History, while Sea Dog Brewing, Tilton Brothers Brewing and Bad Lab Beer Co. join for the first time.

Scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 26, Beer for History events take place at the museum’s historic Folsom Tavern from 6pm to 8pm. Built in 1775, Folsom Tavern was visited by George Washington in 1789 for “a libation.”

“If George Washington enjoyed himself here, we hope you will, too,” laughed Bray.

Tickets for each event are $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Series tickets are $60 and $80 for members and nonmembers, respectively, while youth (under 21) are $3. Ticket prices include beer (21+), entertainment, light snacks from Sea Dog Brewing and more.

On Thursday, November 1, Sam von Trapp will be on hand to pour some of von Trapp Brewing’s award winning beer at the American Independence Museum’s final Beer for History in 2018.

Emma Bray, museum executive director, said this fourth and final event in the series may be its busiest.

“There is a lot of excitement around having Vermont’s von Trapp Brewing here,” she said. “This entire series has brought in some of the area’s finest brewers, so we are thrilled they accepted our invitation to join us.”

As for what may be “on tap” at the event, von Trapp Brewing is expected to bring their Helles, Pilsner, Vienna, Oktoberfest and Dunkel, which are available year round and represent some of their most popular brews.

Now in its third year, Beer for History is beginning to attract regional attention, according to Bray.

“Every event is family friendly, unique, lively–this series is becoming a destination for some,” she said. “I think Beer for History’s success also demonstrates the vibrancy of Exeter as a cultural destination.”

Proceeds from Beer for History benefit the American Independence Museum, which features Folsom Tavern (c.1775) and Ladd-Gilman House (c.1721). Home to a world-class collection of 3,000 historic artifacts, the museum welcomes more than 5,000 visitors annually and distinguishes itself with educational school programs and events that make history fun and relevant.

Admission for Beer for History events, which take place from 6 to 8 pm, is $15 for members and $20 for non members. Children’s tickets are also available. Beer for 21+ is included in the ticket price.

On Thursday, October 4, Earth Eagle Brewings of Portsmouth will pour its craft beer at the next Beer for History, which features a different brewer every other week at four different events through November 1.

Sponsored by Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law, Beer for History takes place in Folsom Tavern (c.1775), an historic tavern in downtown Exeter that once served George Washington.

In addition to craft beer, Beer for History features music, light snacks and some form of historic entertainment, which may include colonial tavern games, colonial trivia, and/or escape room.

Proceeds from Beer for History benefit the American Independence Museum, which is home to Folsom Tavern and the Ladd-Gilman House (c.1721).

In an effort to spread community awareness of Beer for History and provide the public with a “taste” of the series, the museum will participate in a special history trivia night at Shooter’s Pub in Exeter on Thursday, September 27 at 7:30 pm.

After months of planning and preparation, the American Independence Museum is set to “tap” its first Beer for History event on Thursday, September 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

To celebrate this year’s 4-event series, which is presented by Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law, the museum is offering the chance to win 2 tickets to the Exeter Powder Keg Beer & Chili Festival for anyone who purchases a series ticket on or before September 20.

Series tickets are $50 for members and $70 for non-members, while children (under 21) are $3. Tickets for individual events are $15 for members and $20 for non members. Ticket prices include beer (21+), entertainment, light snacks and more.

Each Beer for History event features a different brewer. Neighborhood Beer Co. kicks off the series on September 20 followed by Earth Eagle Brewings, Throwback Brewery and von Trapp Brewing on October 4, October 18 and November 1, respectively.

At each event, brewers will pour tastings of up to three different craft brews. Types of beer expected at the first event include Neighborhood Beer Co.’s Granite Acorn Autumn Lager and Mow Money Lawnmower IPA.

In addition to craft beer, Beer for History features music, light snacks and some form of historic entertainment, which may include colonial tavern games, colonial trivia, and/or escape room write Sambla. Lexie’s Burger Bus will be present at every Beer for History except for 10/4.
