At this Beer for History, Stowe, Vermont’s von Trapp Brewing will showcase three of their brews.

Different history programming will be ‘on tap’ at each event, including music, trivia or colonial tavern games. Featuring both indoor and outdoor seating. Families Welcome!

Get into the spirit with the brewery that is a little of Austria, a lot of Vermont, von Trapp Brewing. They don’t come to our neck of the woods often, so don’t miss them! Beer for History is presented by Presented by Donahue Tucker & Ciandella.

von Trapp Brewing will pour the following beers:

Bohemian Pilsner: Our award-winning interpretation of a Bohemian Style Pilsner. Spicy, citrus peel botanicals combine with a dry, peppery finish to create a truly thirst-quenching lager. A beer that demands you take more than one sip.

Dunkel: The original dark lager of Munich and the first beer “style” born out of the German Beer Purity Law. Creamy, toffee aromas balance the bitterness of Munich malts in our roasted brown lager. Although dark in color, Dunkel is medium in body and finishes dry and clean, resulting in a rich lager that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Stowe Style Festbier: This collaboration with Narragansett Brewing Company of Providence, Rhode Island is the next offering in the Stowe Style series: a highly aromatic, hop-forward take on the traditional festbier. Inspired by the lighter style of lager served on the grounds of Munich’s annual Oktoberfest celebration, this single-decocted pale lager is brewed with pilsner malt and loaded with bright, floral noble hops in the whirlpool.

Tavern Talk: The First Amendment

Date: October 10, 2023
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: Folsom Tavern, 164 Water St., Exeter, NH
Cost: FREE

The First Amendment protects our most basic freedoms, none more important than freedom of speech. But what do we do about speech that threatens to destroy the social fabric?

Made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities, this FREEpresentation considers the constitutional arguments for and against hate speech codes and why the Supreme Court ruled against St. Paul’s hate speech ordinance. If hate speech codes are unconstitutional, it falls on citizens to find other ways to counter hateful speech.

We’ll explore what capacities citizens need to preserve freedom and the social fabric. Could it be that persuasion and deliberation might be better strategies for all of us?

American Independence Museum Launches Escape Room Team Building Program

American Independence Museum Launches Escape Room Team Building Program

According to research, escape rooms are not only effective for team building but fun, findings that have helped inform the American Independence Museum’s recently launched Escape Room Team Building Program.

“We have the perfect space for an escape room experience, too,” said the museum’s Executive Director Jennifer Carr, citing Folsom Tavern as backdrop to their program.

Folsom Tavern, built in 1775 by Samuel Folsom and visited by George Washington in 1789, was the site of the formation of the New Hampshire chapter of the Society of the Cincinnati in 1783.

Founded by officers of the Continental Army and their French counterparts who served together in the American Revolution, the Society owns both Folsom Tavern and Ladd-Gilman House (c. 1721) as well as AIM’s collection.

“There is a lot of history behind the museum,” added Carr, who said this history is embedded in the Escape Room Team Building Program. “The backstory behind our escape room experience is that it’s July 1775, and Boston is occupied by the British Army.”

Within this story, New Hampshire militia are gathering to march south and assist the newly arrived George Washington, while Colonel Sullivan has written letters for Washington that detail the whereabouts of troops, supplies, and munitions.

“To ensure these dispatches don’t fall into the wrong hands, Colonel Sullivan locked them in a box in the parlor of Folsom Tavern,” said the museum’s Alena Shellenbean, who designed the program.

It is the responsibility of program participants to get them to the horseman, who is leaving for the camp of General Washington. “It’s a fun team-building experience almost 250 years in the making,” added Shellenbean.

Program cost is $15 per person with discounts available for nonprofits and corporate sponsors. To learn more about the museum’s Escape Room Team Building Program, visit https://www.independencemuseum.org/team-building, or email [email protected].
