The Berlin Wall

In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built to divide the democratic republic of West Germany from socailist East Germany.

In 1991, the Berlin Wall was completely demolished, but its dismantling began two years earlier by people who fought for democracy in Europe. Pieces of the Wall were removed and kept as mementos of this historic event.

The collapse of the Berlin Wall came to be viewed as a symbol of the collapse of Communism and the end of the Cold War. The Wall had a long history as a symbolic item, but what it represented changed as it fell. In this video we take a closer look at the symbolic and commemorative value of the Berlin Wall.
