Initiative Overview
In addition to experiential learning, our Educating Children & Youth initiative emphasizes structured education through comprehensive curricula and field trips. Crafted for age groups 5 to 18, these materials and resources go beyond traditional methods, offering a well-rounded and holistic educational experience both on-site and in schools.

Our onsite field trip offerings for schools and homeschool groups explore diverse, vivid, and unique stories of the local people, places, events, and artifacts of the Revolutionary era in honest, relevant, compassionate, and unexpected ways.

Camp Programs
We offer summer MiniCamps for children that explore various aspects of the American Revolution and colonial life.
Join us for a summer filled with intrigue, stories, activities and discovery! Camps include live demonstrations and a show-and-tell of 18th century life and objects. Fill your Thursdays with books, toys, games, and activities related to the colonial era. Discover the stories of women, people of color, and spies who all helped create America!
Summer Programs
Each Thursday in July, we provide a mini-camp from 9:00-3:00. Sign up for one ‘camp’ or all four. Campers will immerse themselves in hands-on 18th century life, uncovering the stories of the people who helped build our nation and how they can continue to be a part of America’s unfolding story. Each week campers will dress in colonial clothing, participate in games and activities, create projects and eat a colonial-inspired snack.
In addition, we offer a collaborative week-long camp with the Gundalow Company where campers spend time here at the Independence Museum and time in Portsmouth with the Gundalow Company. mini-camps for children that explore various aspects of the American Revolution and colonial life.
Field Trips
Aligned with educational curricula, our field trips provide a practical and enriching experience, fostering a deep appreciation for the United States’ foundational principles and civic engagement. Join us for an educational journey that instills historical consciousness and pride in our nation’s legacy.
Current Field Trip Offerings
Multiple Perspectives: Patriots & Loyalists
This on-site field trip offers a 2-hour journey into the past where students step into the shoes of Patriots, Loyalists, and Neutrals to uncover the complexities of the American Revolution.
While here, students explore different perspectives of the American struggle for freedom and independence by examining the viewpoints of Patriots, Loyalists, and Neutrals. They will compare colonial life to modern life, analyze reasons for differing perspectives, and reflect on their own potential choices.
