Brewers from across NH to Participate in Beer for History

A series of events begun more than 5 years ago to promote the importance of history education, the American Independence Museum’s Beer for History will feature brewers from across New Hampshire. Pipe Dream Brewing (Londonderry) starts the series on September 22 followed by Sap House Meadery (Center Ossipee) on October 6, Earth Eagle Brewings (Portsmouth) on October 20, and UNH Brewing Science Laboratory (Durham) on November 3.

“We are thrilled to have such an incredible lineup this year,” noted Jennifer Carr, Acting Executive Director of the museum.

In addition to featuring unique brews, most of which are not available locally in the greater Seacoast region, Beer for History features colonial-inspired games and music. The series, sponsored by Donahue Tucker & Ciandella, takes place within Folsom Tavern (c. 1775), which once welcomed George Washington.

“Kids can play outside on our spacious lawn and enjoy the beginning of fall in beautiful and historic downtown Exeter,” added Carr.

Beer for History events takes place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 22 at the American Independence Museum’s Folsom Tavern, 164 Water St., Exeter, NH. Tickets are $10 for members and $15 for non-members, while youth (under 21) are free.

Beer for History Returns to Folsom Tavern

On Thursday, September 22 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m, Beer for History 2022 kicks off at the American Independence Museum’s Folsom Tavern (c. 1775) with Pipe Dream Brewing. Based in Londonderry, Pipe Dream Brewing has made a name for itself with a wide variety of craft brews, including sours, stouts, IPA’s, and specialty beers.

“Pipe Dream Brewing is excited to be back at Beer for History,” said Pipe Dream’s Tasting Coordinator Morgan Brown. “We love being able to help highlight New Hampshire’s rich history in fun and exciting ways.”

At the event, Pipe Dream will pour three beers, including West to East IPA, Berrylicious Sour Ale, and Pumpkin Ale In addition to craft beer and historic ambiance—George Washington had visited Folsom Tavern—Beer for History often features colonial-inspired games and occasionally live music.

This year’s series is sponsored by Donahue Tucker & Ciandella. “We are thrilled to again sponsor this series, as it brings the community together and champions the importance of history,” said Beth MacDonald, partner at Donahue Tucker & Ciandella.

According to Jennnifer Carr, Curator and Acting Executive Director at the American Independence Museum, proceeds from Beer for History support their inclusive storytelling initiative. In the museum’s current programs, events, and exhibits, many of the highlighted stories are told from different perspectives, such as those of Black Americans, women, and Indigenous people.

“We hope Beer for History can serve as an open invitation to surrounding communities and those who have yet to hear about the museum,” said Carr. “Come have a beer for history, learn about our initiative to reinterpret our collection and history as a nation, and feel welcomed by new friends.”

Beer for History Welcomes The Czar’s Brewery

On Thursday, November 18, the American Independence Museum will host Beer for History, sponsored by Donahue Tucker & Ciandella, with The Czar’s Brewery as the featured brewer. Located in historic downtown Exeter, capital of New Hampshire during the Revolutionary War, The Czar’s Brewery offers everything from brown, blonde, and pumpkin ales to IPA’s, hefeweizens, and more.

“We are thrilled to have them as our featured brewer,” noted museum Program Manager Sarah Jaworski. “We love how their playfulness and creativity in naming beers give a nod to history.”

The Czar’s Brewery is owned by Henry Vance, longtime director for the Associated Grocers of New England, an independent grocers’ cooperative.

“This is the first time we have partnered with Henry. Czar’s is our neighbor, located just across the street from the museum. We are so excited to highlight them!” added Jaworski.

UNH BrewLab to headline next Beer for History

On the heels of a successful kickoff in October with Pipe Dream Brewing from Londonderry, Beer for History, sponsored by Donahue Tucker & Ciandella, will welcome UNH BrewLab on Thursday, November 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. Featuring craft beer, colonial-inspired games and trivia, Beer for History is appropriate for all ages.

“It takes place outside on our Folsom Tavern Lawn, so there is plenty of space for families with kids to enjoy late autumn in Exeter,” noted museum Executive Director Emma Stratton. “There will also be tents and campfires, so it will be a very festive environment.”

At this Beer for History, UNH BrewLab is expected to bring three beers, including “Harvest Thyme Brown Ale,” which is brewed using the ‘unloved’ bread ends from the UNH dining hall fresh baked bread. The thyme added to the beer comes from the Farm To You NH program, a student-run farm on campus.

“Stormy Seas Oatmeal Stout” is a full bodied oatmeal stout with dark roasty notes and a hint of sweet aroma from local maple syrup additions. Local oats give it a nice smooth creaminess. A hoppy farmhouse style beer, “Wildcat Wheat” is brewed with wheat and orange peels and dry hopped with Citra hops, which elicit ‘sweet aromas.’

“You will also get the chance to talk with some of the student brewers,” noted Stratton, who said the purpose behind Beer for History is two-fold.

“We want to get people excited about history and the programs we offer, but we also want to be a gathering spot for locals and visitors alike,” she added. “Beer for History has always been a place where everyone can gather and have a terrific time.”

On Thursday, October 14, Beer for History, sponsored by Donahue Tucker & Ciandella, returns to the American Independence Museum, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m, on the Folsom Tavern lawn with tents and campfires.

Bringing together some of the region’s finest craft brewers, Beer for History 2021 kicks off with Pipe Dream Brewing, based in Londonderry. Featuring sours, stouts, IPA’s, specialty beers, and more, Pipe Dream Brewing headlines Beer for History for the first time.

“We are very excited to work with them on this exciting reboot of our popular Beer for History series after a hiatus last year,” said museum Executive Director Emma Stratton. “This will also be a great opportunity to see our new Folsom Lawn, which is now flat and features pathways that connect to our Ladd-Gilman House.”

In addition to craft beer, Beer for History features trivia, colonial-inspired games and self-guided tours of historic Folsom Tavern.

“It’s a great way to spend a little time in a family-friendly tavern where George Washington himself once enjoyed a beer,” added Stratton.

Beer for History welcomes Sea Dog Brewing

Presented by Donahue Tucker & Ciandella, the next Beer for History takes place on Thursday, Thursday 24 with Sea Dog Brewing the featured brewer.

Supplying food for each of the Series’ five events, Sea Dog Brewing is expected to bring three beers, each of which are only available hyper-locally. Exeter River Red is an Irish Red Ale in which the grain bill has been enhanced to give it greater complexity; Newington Abbey Ale, a traditional Belgium Trappist Abbey Ale; and Merrimac Valley Cream Ale is a lighter smoother beer that utilized corn in addition to barley to give it a more creamy quality.

In addition to craft brew and beer, the event will feature live colonial-inspired music and entertainment. Each event in the Series take place in historic Folsom Tavern (1775), which is one of two structures on the property of the American Independence Museum, which organizes it.

“This is a chance to have a beer where George Washington had one in 1789,” said Series Organizer Victoria Su. “It’s festive, fun and family-friendly.”

Other events in the Series include Tilton Brothers Brewing (11/7) and Bad Lab Beer Co. (11/21). 

“The series is even more enjoyable because it features brewers deeply invested in the community,” added Su. “By supporting us and them, you support Exeter and surrounding towns while having a great night out.”

Proceeds from the event support educational programming and care of the museum’s collection, which includes two working drafts of the US Constitution and an original copy of the Declaration of Independence. 

Tickets for each Beer for History event are $15 for members and $20 for non-members, while youth (under 21) are $3. Ticket prices include beer (21+), entertainment and light snacks. $10 designated driver tickets are also available.
